Flea Market Finds

The flea market is not only a great place to find unique pieces, it is also a good place to seek out inspiration.

Whether it is through the layers of colors you see, or the items for sale themselves, there are a lot of things to see and do and more ways to be inspired!

I love the layers here and the color scheme that could come from this.

Whether you find something to take home with you, or you just end up with a few good pictures and ideas, you can make a day of it.

Here are some of the things we saw while at a flea market...

I just love these old seats from a theater/opera house.

These old carts are being sanded down and brought back to life to make great coffee tables.

This chair has great lines and details. If refinished it could make a splash in any space.

Here's what we bought...

This yellow bar cart will serve as a side-cart for our grill, but it won't be yellow... more on that in a later post.

We also found an old barn ladder that we are putting in our living room. The ladder leans high up on the wall. It serves as a point of focus that draws your eye up to the great height in the space, while the rungs offer a place to hang blankets. (Apparently I didn't take a picture though...sorry!)

Do you enjoy the flea market scene? Hunting out a unique piece, and bartering the price down. I think it is fun, and you never know what you can find! For the $2 entry fee at the Elephant's Trunk, I think it is worth it!

Happy hunting and designing!

Barnyard Inspiration

As you may or may not be aware, my full time day job is as a Nanny/Personal Assistant. Part of the fun is when it's a beautiful day and I get to take the kiddos out for some fun.

On this particular visit, I found color scheme inspiration in a showy peacock's display of his feathers.
Show Off!

Isn't it beautiful! He was showing them off the entire time we were at the barnyard.

Here are some of the other animals we saw at the farm...

This little piggy stayed home.

We fed the donkey!

What else can you do with all of these farmyard photos? Print them off in the same tones and display them in a grid along a hallway, in a playroom, or in a child's space.

You can also pull colors from them and use them in your space. Like the reds and tawny browns in this photo of a deer near the barn fence:

I had never seen a deer on a farm before.

Have fun seeking out sources of inspiration! And as always, happy designing!

Hamptons Living

Every summer, I come out to the Hamptons for work. The last 3 summers we have stayed in different areas, each gorgeous in their own ways. This year is different in that we are only out for a short visit (4 days rather than 4 weeks) and that we are staying right on the ocean in South Hampton.

So I hope you will all forgive me for this very late update, but my day has been filled with packing, travel, settling in, and trying to soak up some of this beautiful place.

As this month is "Inspiration Month" here on the blog, I thought it would fit in perfectly to show you my gorgeous accommodations. (Not what I initially planned on showing you, but what the hey!)

This space has been completely inspired by the sea. From the white washed furniture, to the reflective surfaces (like the sun glistening off of the water), to the sea-star & shell pieces. Might I say, that it is simply stunning?

It is quite the cozy retreat! But who stays in their room while they are in a gorgeous ocean-front oasis? Not me (if I can help it!). Here is a view of our journey here, and where some inspiration could easily come from:

The view from the ferry boat.

The scenery along the way.

Hopefully I will have more inspiration to draw from by the time we head home from this place.

I find that I draw a lot of my inspirations from nature... be it through color combinations, or textural ideas, etc. Do you find yourself returning to the same old, same old, for inspiration? What piques your interest, and makes you want to surround yourself in it's beauty?

Have you taken any fun trips, business or pleasure, this summer that have tickled your fancy?

Happy designing! I hope you all take some time out of your day to smell the roses seek inspiration in the nature that surrounds your day-to-day routine.

How Inspiring

Something you can never have enough of, is inspiration. A spark to start your fire.

The fun comes, not only in the inspiration itself, but also in seeking it out. You never know when it will hit you, or what will set off the spark, but it is great when it's alight.

It is even better when this inspiration can cause a ripple effect, spiraling into fun new projects and color-schemes.

So how do you go from the blah...

To the brilliant..?

Well throughout the month of August, I am going to be sharing ways that I have been inspired, whether it has been something I spotted walking down the road, taking the scenic route, or out and about somewhere.

Inspiration can strike anywhere, so where has your inspiration come from?

I hope you find this month's series as inspiring as ever, and as always, happy designing.
