White On White Inspo

We were forcasted for an epic blizzard Monday night into Tuesday and although we got far less snow than they anticipated, I would much rather be over prepared and bundled up at home, than the alternative.

The park around the corner fully blanketed in snow.

Around our place, we still did get somewhere between 8-10" in total and it was beautiful. We had a lovely day at home, got the place cleaned up, rearranged some furniture and worked on a few projects that I can't wait to share with you later.

The pristine white snow that welcomed us Tuesday for our morning dog walk was so beautiful that I started thinking about white interiors. The white-on-white trend is far from new and far from over. I've put together a handful of {mostly} white spaces to give you some inspiration. This is particularly useful for renters who aren't allowed to paint, homeowners that are afraid of color, or if you just love the white look.

A classic all-white kitchen gives a fresh and clean feeling.

This all-white living room gives a cozy feeling with
layered textures and details to add interest.
This minimalist nook feels a little sparse,
but the addition of the firewood, flowers and faux furs
help to cozy it up.

This white vignette is so chic with
brass details, peonies and  accessories,
I love how it pops off the black wall.

I love a good organizational space and this all white shelving
feels super neat and orderly.
The pops of pink and the gallery wall are a perfect dose of color.

Do you have any spaces that are predominately decorated with all white? Are you a fan of the look, or do you prefer a bit more color?

Motivation Monday :: Love, Flowers and Sunshine

Here in the New York Metro area we are gearing up for Snowmageddon 2015. There are currently light flurries blowing around outside like someone is shaking up the snow globe. But over the next few hours and overnight, it is expected to come down hard. We should be waking up to around 18 inches give or take... offices will be closed and a state of emergency has already been declared.

So in honor of this frigid nor'easter night we are leading into, I thought I would share a favorite quote that is a little bit more sunshine-y.

To be able to sprout love like flowers, to grow a garden in your mind is such a beautiful image. The thought of it just brings a smile to my face.

To me, there is a beautiful image of positive energy here. To be positive, kind, open, and to think that by offering a smile you can spread a bit of sunshine on someone else's day? I just love that, and I hope that no matter how cold and snowy these next few days are for everyone, you feel the warmth and love of those around you.

Best Of 2015!

I am so thrilled to announce that I have been awarded a Houzz award for the Best of 2015 Customer Satisfaction.

So, what is Houzz? If you haven't found Houzz, and you are currently in the midst of a renovation project or even just dreaming of beautiful living spaces, you are missing out. Houzz is an incredible resource in the design industry for both homeowners and the pros alike.

The site is built from professional images supplied by industry professionals (Interior Designers, Architects, Contractors, etc.,) and is extremely user friendly. People can log in and create accounts, search through millions of pictures in different categories and save things they like to an "ideabook." Think design-focused Pinterest, with only professional images.

The other great thing is that once you are ready to actually begin a project around your home, you can seek out the pros in your neighborhood, check out their portfolios, their reviews and reach out to them.

So what are you waiting for? Go check it out and while you are there be sure to follow us.

Motivation Monday :: Love & Inspiration

Today is MLK Jr. day! I used to be in jazz choir (and still to this day sing a bit too enthusiastically in the car). So in honor of the civil-rights movement we celebrate today, I selected a quote from jazz legend Ella Fitzgerald.

I love her words here, and I believe this is really the root of it. If you can find love and inspiration, you can't go wrong.

White Sale Season :: Time for a Bedding Upgrade!

If your email isn't full of a ton of messages about white sales, then you obviously don't sign up for the same stores I do. This time of year is the time to seriously consider upgrading your bedding. A lot of companies offer their "white sale" in an effort to clear out inventory before the new spring arrivals come in.

I've done a lot of the work for you and I wanted to share my five favorite white sale deals.

1. If you are local to the NY-metro area, do yourself a favor and check out Fig Linens in Westport, CT. They have an incredible selection of beautiful linens. From basics to prints to lush blankets and more. And bonus (!) they are currently having their white sale!

2. Two of my favorite brands have joined forces and the result is incredible. West Elm is working with Kate Spade (I know, right?!), and they are now featuring some incredible pieces. Here is one of my favorites from their white sale, going on now.

3. If you aren't a fan of the classic white hotel look for your bedroom at home, take a peek at this pleasing shade of gray. This jersey knit duvet and sham collection from Pottery Barn is a comfortable and casual winner that can be punched up with accent pillows to fit different seasons or different moods.

4. For a classic hotel look with a twist, go for the Ralph Lauren Palmer Brights collection. Where you can add color to your whites with a bold border in orange, yellow, green, or even pink! I love mixing the shams from this collection in with a neutral pallet for an unexpected and super-fun look.

5. For a classic clean look, go for a matelasse. The texture you get is so gorgeous, while still looking polished, in a white or any other color. I chose this one from West Elm, made with an organic cotton percale, it comes in white and gray and would be fabulous in almost any space.

Don't you just love a good white sale?!

Spaces We Love :: Cozy For Winter

This is the time of year when we bundle up with as many layers as we can find and fit into before we head out the door, and when we make our way back in we want to hunker down and get cozy! Here are some great little cozy nooks we found that we would love to snuggle into.

I love lighting candles, and at this time of year,
I find myself doing it as soon as I come home from work.

This nook is full of cozy contrast,
and I love the small bold pops of  orange.

Hanging a hammock inside?!
With that comfy pile of wonderful on top,
I don't know who wouldn't want to snuggle up here.

The corner of this sectional is the perfect place
to settle in with a pile of pillows and blankets.
I love all of this cozy inspiration... makes me want to gather up some pillows and blankets and create a little nook of my own this winter! Do you have a cozy place you like to spend time after coming in from the cold?

Motivation Monday :: The lovers, the dreamers and you

As we've spent the last few days at Disney World for my birthday, I thought it was only fitting to use a quote from Walt.

Having dreams is only the beginning. Persuing them takes planning, dedication and most of all courage.

If you recently set some New Year's resolutions, maybe now is the time to go back and add some dreams to that list. Sit down and think about what it will take to get them accomplished...maybe it takes more than a year, but you have to start somewhere!

Top Three

Well I didn't realize it until I just looked at the numbers, but in 2014 I posted a lot less than I did in 2013. It was a very busy year personally with limited spare time, but I didn't realize how much less it was until just now. That said, I wanted to share with you the most viewed posts from this year, and they all are very significant to me in their own ways.

The third most viewed was a post I shared on a custom vanity. In it I talked about how a custom vanity comes together, why you shouldn't shy away when people use the word 'custom,' and the benefits of going that route. This particular piece ended up being such a great piece for the client, it works very well for their space both functionally and aesthetically. I love doing custom cabinetry--even just little tweaks off the main plan that take something and make it our own can have huge impact in a space.

The second most viewed was of a master bathroom that underwent a huge transformation to make the space not only insanely more visually appealing but also created a much better use of space for the couple. This bathroom gives the professional mother of two an awesome retreat for the end of her busy days. As it's shown, many of you noticed that it didn't have a mirror, well it does now, and at some point I will get back out there for some updated pictures to share of the space. This space will probably be in my top ten favorite projects for a long time to come.

The most popular post (by a long shot) both my personal favorite of the year and it seems the readers agree, is one sharing the details of our wedding day decor. Did I mention that 2014 was a big year for us?! The wedding was definitely an incredible day that will stay close to my heart and I will cherish forever. It means so much to me that it was so widely viewed by others, I hope it was a source of inspiration for anyone planning their own wedding, or just a good look at the making of an event. For me, sharing these details is a way to document the details leading up to our wedding, all the planning and detail that went into creating the space, as well as a showcase of just how much help we had and how much love we are surrounded with, not just on the day itself, but before and after. We are truly blessed.

Last year was definitely a year of incredible highlights. I know I keep saying it, but I am so excited for 2015. We are definitely going to make it another great year! I hope you enjoyed these posts, if you hadn't read through them before, please feel free to jump over, they are all linked in the text above.

In 2015, here's hoping there are more posts going up, more details, more excitement, more design, life, etc., to share; and a top three that is just as fun to search through a year from now.

New Year, Time for a Cure

I have followed along sort of mindlessly with the Apartment Therapy January Cure in the past. But I haven't really ever participated, mostly because I didn't want to put the effort into a home that wasn't truly mine.

(Cure logo from apartment therapy's cure page-linked above.)

This year, however, I have signed up! I know it is a little late to the game being six days into the cure, but we are only on assignment two, so if you are interested in curing your home, click over here to sign up. They will send you the assignments via email throughout the month of January and by the time we have finished the month, your home will be in better shape for the year ahead.

I don't know about you, but I'm so excited to get curing! I think that being involved in design, and working so hard on everyone else's spaces (which I love so much), it is sometimes hard to bring that home. At the same time though I want the same peaceful and organized home that I preach the benefits of to my clients. Truthfully I don't think we are that far off, but what I like about the cure is that you start at the ground (literally) and work your way through your space.

You can tackle the whole home or one specific problem area depending on the size of your place and what feels like it needs the most attention. Either way... I think it is definitely worth take a look at.

Friday was the first assignment, and though I started on Sunday, I still managed to get it done. If you get going today, you should definitely be able to catch up.

This weekend we tackled floors. The assignment was to give your floors a healthy cleaning. And being the way that I am, I left no piece of wood un-scrubbed. I found some good wood floor cleaner, got my supplies ready and then methodically worked through each space. I started with the vacuum and vacuumed up what was there. then I removed all the layers (furniture, area rugs, etc.), vacuumed again, ran the Swiffer over the floors, then got on my hands and knees with the wood cleaner and really got down to business.

I used Method Wood Floor Cleaner, a hard-bristle scrub brush (the kind you scrub your grout with) for the corners of the rooms and where the baseboard meets the floor, and a soft rag for the main areas. While going around the edges, I noticed that we had some old dried sealing around the edges of the living room and the bedroom, so instead of just noting it and moving on, I got out my putty knife and new sealant and scoured away the old, cleaned beneath what was there and re-sealed the edges.

I have to say that it was hard work to clean all the floors, especially scraping and resealing the edges. But, I feel so much better already. The condo just feels like it is in better shape already! And after all, that is the whole point. This little detail that I've never paid much attention to before, has been tackled and I feel like I am being a good homeowner taking good care of my investment.

Part two of the assignment was to pick up some flowers for your home. Having just preached about this on Friday, you might be surprised to learn that I failed to accomplish this part of the task. I can make all sorts of excuses for why it didn't get done, but really the last time I was at the market, none of the flowers spoke to me and we are going out of town soon, so I passed this weekend, and I will pick some up next time.

Time to start working on the second assignment! Who's with me?

Motivation Monday :: Passion

Happy Monday! It's the first one of the year, so try not to get into those Monday blues. It may be hard since this is not only the first Monday of the year, but also the first Monday back into our routines after holiday breaks for many of us.

This year for me is about living better, which means a whole lot and can come from a lot of little changes. The biggest thing is to remember to do things like choose happy, get rooted into things I'm passionate about, and give myself more time.

My mom sent over this adorable little calendar by Orange Circle Studio for my stocking and I love it already! If you have followed along with the blog for any length of time, you know I'm a sucker for words. I love quotes, phrases etc., especially when they are written beautifully.

This month's phrase "live with passion" is so on point for the beginning of the year, and I fully intend to fill this year with this mantra on repeat.

5 Habits at Home to Kick-start a Better Year

I want to share with you five easy habits that help me stay happy and reduce my stress level within my home.

1.Make your bed.
Everyday, the easiest thing you can do is make your bed. Getting ready for bed, and being able to just snuggle in and get cozy is so nice. It will make your room look and feel cleaner and cozier, and you will just feel better.

2. Wipe down your kitchen surfaces.
After dinner every night, the food is cleaned up and put away, the dishwasher is quietly humming in the background. Just grab your cleaning wipe of choice and run over the counter tops. I'm a bit crazy about doing this, but I do the counters and then the stove top with and without the burners on. When I turn the light off and walk away, the kitchen is closed for the day, and when I come in first thing in the morning for coffee, I don't feel the chaos of crumbs on everything. If you let it sit, it only gets harder.

3. When you're done, put it away.
Simple as it might be, I'm sure you've been known to use something and then walk away without putting it back, maybe it's your toothbrush, you use it and leave it on the counter, maybe it's a book you were referencing... it can be any number of things. But when you are done, put it back on the shelf, in the closet, in its holder, wherever it may belong, put it there. With everything living in its rightful home, you won't go crazy trying to find things the next time you need them. For us, in our small space, it helps things stay organized, which helps me feel calm. But even in the largest of homes, if things don't get put away, piles can build and chaos will ensue.

4. Deal with junk mail immediately.
There is no sense in keeping a pile of anything. If it's junk, toss it. Don't let it take up your surface space or your piece of mind. Do it when you bring in it, save yourself time later so you don't have to sift through it again, and just put it immediately into the recycle bin.

5. Buy yourself flowers.
If you are new around here you may not be aware of my love of fresh flowers, now you know. I think this is so worth the $5+/- at the market when you are picking up your groceries and it adds such an impact to your day to day life. I like to alternate which vase I use depending on the flowers, and then I try to put them where I will enjoy them. So pick a place where you spend a lot of time, whether it's your desk, kitchen counters or coffee table, let them be seen. They will make you smile as you pass, because really who doesn't enjoy seeing a little floral beauty as a part of their day?

These five things are key for me, and I hope they help you. Sometimes they don't get done every day or every week, but try to keep it consistent and it will become second nature. You will start to notice your mood and stress levels all changing for the better.

Day One

Happy New Year, lovelies!

Last year was such a wonderful and amazing year filled with so many great things. But I honestly can't wait for this year. We have so many big things planned, so many friends getting married this year, and even a few vacations in the books, so I just know 2015 will be a good one!

But what I am most excited for (in all my Type A glory) is to have a little control back in my life. I am taking the reins but not holding them so tightly.

A major point for me this year will be timing, and I've already started working on it.

The second focus around here will be organization. Organization around the house, organization of my time, organization of my projects, organization everywhere! When I'm organized I just feel good, things get done and I feel accomplished. Spaces feel clean when everything has a home and then I feel more relaxed in those spaces. I preach it to clients all the time, so this year I'm bringing it home!

The third focus of this year will be on me. I need to make sure I schedule a little time for me to do me. Whether it's practicing yoga, getting a manicure or taking an hour to work on my knitting, I am a priority in my life. This extra time for me will encourage a more positive frame of mind for everything else in my day to day life.

What are you working on this year? I plan to keep you all informed on my goals this year, I will be sharing some organizational tips and stories on how our space is cleaning up. What else would you be interested in reading about here? Of course there will be project stories on what we are working on as well as project reveals once the work is done, mixed in with color inspiration, etc., but are there posts you are looking for or would enjoy reading? Let me know!

I am feeling so pumped for this new year; I'm so happy to start it on a calm peaceful note at home with my hubby and our pup. I hope wherever you are ringing in the new year you are having a wonderful time, and whether you're resolving for anything in 2015 or not, I wish you all a happy new year!
